“Leadership is not about authority, it is about responsibility.”

— APD Chief Tarrick McGuire

The Alexandria Police department held a promotion ceremony, with APD Chief Tarrick McGuire swearing in new captains and lieutenants Aug. 1 at the Lyceum.

“Policing continues to be the most visible public facing form of government and among the most courageous guardians of our community,” McGuire said. “Leadership is not about authority, it is about responsibility.”

Newly promoted to captain were officers Tara Delio-May and Greg Simon. Promoted to lieutenant were officers Cynthia Hurley, Ryan Waple and Zygmond Slevinski.

“Great policing results from great leadership and great leadership comes from great character, integrity and willingness to serve,” McGuire said in addressing those being promoted. “You are being called to lead the Alexandria Police Department into its future. Lead with courage, serve with compassion and always remember that it takes each and every one of you to make this the safest city in the nation.”
