Clear the Shelters is a great opportunity to adopt a pet at no cost.
Jeffrey C. McKay, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, announced in his weekly newsletter that the Clear the Shelters adoption event returns to Fairfax County from Friday, Aug. 29, through Sunday, Aug. 31, with all adoption fees waived for every pet — dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles and more.
Held at both the Michael R. Frey Campus in Fairfax and the Lorton Campus, the three-day event makes it easier than ever to welcome a new companion into your home. Walk-ins are welcome during open hours—no appointment is needed.
Adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, starter food, and a voucher for a free wellness exam. Thanks to the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, adopted dogs receive a leash, and cats go home with a collar and ID.
The Adoption Audition program, available again this year, allows families to take a dog home for a five-day trial before making a final decision. This helps ensure it is the perfect fit for both the pet and their new family.
The open hours for the Clear the Shelter are:
Friday, August 29: noon to 7 p.m.
Saturday, August 30: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, August 31: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
